A Letter to the Past Me

Dear freshman Victoria,

First off I want to reassure you that high school isn’t as scary as you may think it is. You’ve already gotten through the worst, middle school. There are cliques and lots of drama like you see on TV but if you don’t let that take over your life and do what is best for your high school career it can be an amazing, life changing 4 years. And don’t second guess your choice to switch school districts because it was one of the smartest decisions you’ve ever made.

I know that making new friends is hard when you don’t know anyone but you need to get out of your comfort zone and talk to any friendly face in your classes. One day you will find the perfect group of people that treat you with respect and are your forever friends. Your circle may shrink through the years but everything happens for a reason and you don’t need anyone that is toxic in your life. You already made that mistake in middle school and its time to change.

I know you aren’t super into doing your school work but you have to put in 110% when it comes to your grades. You need as many options as possible because you can’t live at home forever, even if your dad wants you to, and getting straight into a University or State college will be well worth it. If you start now then maybe we can get rid of your laziness by the time you are my age.

Speaking of your father, you need to keep a closer eye on him. You have to push him to quit smoking and watch what he eats so he can keep his heart healthy. If he continues down that road then it may be too late 4 years from now and we both know how important he is to you. Don’t forget your mom, she may be around now but you don’t know what lies in the future and she may be more distant.

I know all you hear is people telling you to make sure you make the most of your 4 years and they are right. You don’t want to be here in your last week of high school thinking about all the things you wish you did. Go to the Bell Game each year, go to Homecoming, go to prom junior year, I promise it will be so much fun and one of the best nights of your life. Regrets aren’t fun and you want to look back at your time at Fountain Valley and think of it as the time you got out of your shell and just lived.

I think the best advice overall that I can give you is to just love yourself and strive to do whatever is best for YOU. Work hard in school and get that cord. Go out with your friends and don’t let work hold you back every weekend (yes, you never stop working). Spend time with your family and cherish the time you have with them before you go off to college. And don’t get too caught up in boys because you are more important. You will have an amazing time if you listen to my advice and you can go to college knowing you made the most of your time.

Best wishes,

18 year old Victoria
